it’s exam season.

i walked past the library a couple of days ago. every table was packed. students hunched over textbooks, highlighters in hand, coffee cups scattered everywhere.

you could feel it. the energy in the room. everyone’s wired.

talked to a friend after. she’s been studying 12 hours a day for the past week. hasn’t slept properly in days.

“i’m so exhausted but i can’t fall asleep. like my body’s tired but my brain won’t shut off. and when i finally do sleep, i wake up every hour.”

classic.

her body’s in survival mode. nervous system stuck on high alert. doesn’t matter that there’s no actual physical threat. her system can’t tell the difference between a predator and an exam.

so it keeps her in fight-or-flight. all day. all night.

and she’s not alone.

this happens to everyone during high-stress periods. exams, deadlines, job interviews, relationship issues.

your nervous system gets stuck. and suddenly you’re exhausted but can’t rest. anxious but don’t know why. irritable over nothing.

i used to think this was just “stress” and you had to push through it.

turns out? your nervous system is an actual biological system with mechanics you can understand and work with.

and once i learned how it operates, everything changed.

sitting here now at 5:54am. blue light from my laptop glowing in my face while it’s pitch black outside.

ambient music playing in the background. no lyrics. just rhythm.

been buried in books on this for months. van der kolk’s the body keeps the score, deb dana’s polyvagal theory in therapy, peter levine’s waking the tiger, sapolsky’s why zebras don’t get ulcers. obsessively reading everything i could find on how the nervous system actually works.

because this topic is fucking crucial. and almost nobody understands it.

remember that post on the subconscious mind? people said that it changed how they see themselves.

if you haven’t checked it read it after this.

but if you thought the subconscious was insane, wait until you learn about the nervous system.

because your nervous system is the operating system running everything. and most people’s operating system is glitching constantly.

let me show you what’s actually happening inside your body right now. and why understanding this will explain basically everything about your behavior, your relationships, your success, your health.

YOUR BODY KEEPS SCORE (LITERALLY)

“The body keeps the score: if the memory of trauma is encoded in the viscera, in heartbreaking and gut-wrenching emotions, then our only way out is through those feelings.” - Bessel van der Kolk

here’s what most people don’t realize.

your body is tracking everything.

every stress. every threat. every time you pushed through exhaustion. every time you ignored your body’s signals.

it’s all stored. accumulated. creating a baseline state.

i mentioned this in my subconscious and conscious post but it’s important to mention it again.

there was a famous experiment from the 1980s. neuroscientist benjamin libet hooked people up to brain monitoring equipment and asked them to flex their wrist whenever they felt like it.

simple task. flex your wrist. note the exact moment you decided to do it.

here’s what he found: the brain showed activity preparing to flex the wrist about 200-500 milliseconds before the person reported consciously deciding to flex.

your nervous system initiated the action before you were aware of choosing it.

all subconscious processes occur as a result of activity in the nervous system.

the subconscious and the nervous system are intertwined.

so if your nervous system has learned that the world is dangerous, that you’re always under threat, that you need to stay vigilant constantly?

it’s going to keep you in that state. regardless of what your conscious mind wants.

you can’t think your way out of a nervous system state. because the nervous system operates below conscious control.

it’s responding to years of accumulated experience. to patterns it learned for survival.

and if those patterns say “threat everywhere,” you’re going to feel anxious, reactive, exhausted. not because you’re weak. because your body is doing exactly what it learned to do.

THE THREAT DETECTION SYSTEM THAT NEVER TURNS OFF

free subscribers stop here, paid subscribers let dive into this.

your nervous system has one primary job and that is to keep you alive.

and it does this through constant environmental scanning. threat detection running 24/7.

this made sense evolutionarily. predators, rival tribes, environmental dangers. your ancestors needed hypervigilance to survive.
